27 people were hospitalized in Liverpool after a car crashed into football fans celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title win. Two of the injured are in serious condition.

Police said a 53-year-old man has been arrested. The incident is being treated as an accident, not a terrorist act.

Tens of thousands of people gathered in pouring rain to celebrate their favorite team's victory, with players riding on an open-top bus and fireworks.

The team bus passed through Water Street minutes before the car crashed into the crowd, witnesses told the media.

“It happened extremely quickly,” said 48-year-old Harry Rashid from Solihull, near Birmingham, in central England, who was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters.

“It was awful, you could hear the car going over people,” he said.

Other eyewitnesses heard screams and saw an angry crowd surrounding the car before the police arrived.

Merseyside police called for calm and said the man arrested was a “53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.”

“Extensive investigations are underway to establish the circumstances that led to the collision,” a police spokesman added, urging the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ambulances and a fire truck arrived at the scene, and the injured received first aid on the street. | BGNES
