The "War of the Roses" between Trump and Musk

In such a toxic breakup, there are no winners, writes The Wall Street Journal.

Someone could have hit the jackpot if they had bet on the exact date of the inevitable divorce between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. These two "modest" egos were never a good match for a long-term relationship. The rift between them has officially escalated into a political "War of the Roses."

For Democrats, of course, this is real political theater. Musk opened fire first, calling the "One Big Beautiful Law" a true "legislative perversion." Trump responded with disappointment but reminded everyone that "friend Elon" knew very well what the law contained from the very beginning.

Musk then upped the ante with a call to his followers on X: "Kill the law!" The president did not remain silent and suggested that Musk was suffering from "Trump obsession syndrome." Musk's response? "Without me, you wouldn't have won!"

When it comes to escalation, both know only one way — up, writes The Wall Street Journal in its analysis. Trump posted on Truth Social: "The easiest way to save billions in the budget is to end all subsidies and contracts for Elon." Subsequently, Tesla's shares plummeted.

Musk, however, did not remain silent and shifted into high gear. "Trump is in the Epstein files. That's why they're not declassifying them," he said, adding sarcastically, "Have a nice day, Donald J. Trump!"

Musk then approved a foreign tweet: "Trump should be impeached and replaced by J.D. Vance."

Where will this end? No one knows. Elon Musk will most likely not get his subsidies for electric cars back in this "big and beautiful" law. He is also unlikely to lose his contracts with NASA and the Pentagon—they forced American institutions to raise the bar in the rocket race and space technology.

Musk really tried to shake up a system that desperately needed it. His methods are unpredictable, the results controversial, but... in such a toxic breakup, there are no winners. | BGNES
