The European Commission has proposed a target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, as part of efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The plan includes flexible mechanisms to address concerns from member states, which must approve it.
The long-awaited target marks a key milestone in the EU's climate policy. To convince more skeptical countries, Brussels is proposing that from 2036, the bloc's countries could include in their accounts up to 3% of carbon credits purchased to finance green projects outside Europe.
The proposal is to be discussed by the governments of the 27 member states and the European Parliament. | BGNES, AFP
