US President Donald Trump said he would extend until July 9 a pause on his high tariffs against the EU as trade talks continue. He also said he was "not happy" with Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow fired a record number of combat drones into Ukraine, killing 13 people, AFP reports.
Before boarding Air Force One, Trump said he told European Commission (EC) head Ursula von der Leyen in a "very nice conversation" that he would grant her request for an extension of the original June 1 deadline. He added that the negotiating teams "will get together quickly and see if we can work something out".
On 25 May, Von der Leyen announced that she had spoken to the Republican and wrote in X: "Europe is ready to advance the negotiations quickly and decisively. Negotiations with the EU are ongoing. We will need until 9 July to get a good deal."
On the war in Ukraine, the US president said he was "not happy" with his Russian counterpart after Moscow fired a record number of combat drones into Ukraine, killing 13 people.
"I am not happy with what Putin is doing. He's killing a lot of people and I don't know what the hell happened to Putin," Trump said.
"I've known him for a long time. I've always gotten along with him, but he's sending missiles into cities and killing people, and I don't like that at all," he added.
On May 19, Trump and Putin held a two-hour phone call, after which the US leader said Russia and Ukraine would "immediately begin ceasefire negotiations."
Putin made no commitment to halting his three-year invasion of Ukraine, announcing only a vague proposal to work on a "memorandum" outlining Moscow's demands for peace.
Speaking of the nuclear talks with Iran, the US president described them as very good.
"We're making real progress, serious progress," Trump said on the tarmac at Morristown Airport after the fifth round of Oman-brokered nuclear talks.
"I think we can have good news on the Iranian front," he added. | BGNES
