Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Aarhus, western Denmark, for the start of Denmark’s presidency of the European Union, the Danish government announced.
“The Danish presidency will do everything possible to help Ukraine on its path to EU membership,” declared Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, one of Europe’s most steadfast supporters of Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion.
Zelensky’s arrival in Denmark comes at a time when the United States has announced a suspension of certain weapons deliveries to Ukraine.
“On the one hand, we must strengthen Ukraine, and on the other – weaken Russia,” added the Danish leader.
“We are doing this by increasing military support, because Ukraine is essential for Europe’s security,” emphasized Frederiksen, who has headed Denmark’s government since 2019.
She also highlighted the need to “step up pressure” on Moscow with new sanctions, AFP reported.
In addition to Frederiksen, Zelensky will meet in Aarhus with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.
Copenhagen has identified the security of the European continent, linked in particular to a strict migration policy, as one of the priorities of its presidency.
Denmark also aims to advance the European plan presented in March to boost the EU member states’ defense capabilities through simplified procedures and loans granted to countries to finance investments in the European defense industry. | BGNES
