On August 18, Prof. Ventseslav Nikolov (affectionately known as Ventsi-cello) – distinguished cellist, conductor, teacher, and writer – passed away. Born in 1943 in Ruse, Bulgaria, he left a remarkable legacy with more than 1,500 concerts worldwide, over 200 recordings, and several books. A professor at the National Music Academy “Pancho Vladigerov,” the founder of the chamber ensemble Collegium Musicum, and an inspiration to generations of musicians, he will be remembered for his artistry, virtuosity, and devotion to music.

In his final interview with BGNES, Prof. Nikolov reflected: “If we want to be Europeans, we should not judge Bulgaria by its shops, but strive to remain part of Europe’s culture.” He lamented the lack of music education in schools, warning that without it, “we cannot read the book of our own culture.” With characteristic wisdom, he reminded that true fulfillment comes not from greed or haste but from the ability to feel awe, joy, and the simple beauty of each moment.

“We are still romantics, still living in the Romantic era,” he observed. “But people must also learn to find joy in their own time. Every age has had its misfortunes, yet people have always rejoiced, married, had children. Warmth has always been present in families.”

May his memory endure. | BGNES
