With tears in her eyes, Coco Gauff admitted that she didn't handle the transition from Paris clay to Wimbledon grass well after being knocked out in the first round of Wimbledon. The Roland Garros champion and second seed was sent home by Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, who won 7-6 (3), 6-1.
"Maybe I just needed to play more matches on this surface before the tournament. Find the right solutions. The transition is very fast, I need to practice more or play in Bad Homburg or Eastbourne", said the 21-year-old American, who was also knocked out in the opening round in Berlin.
"I wasn't mentally ready, I didn't have enough time to celebrate my title in Paris and then refocus. I believe I can adjust my game and make changes. I want to improve on grass. I definitely need changes if I want to be successful here. I'm trying to be positive. After the match, I definitely felt bad in the locker room. I don't like losing. Dayana played great. In some points, I wasn't playing bad at all, but she was hitting winners", the two-time Grand Slam champion continued.
Gauff followed her compatriot and third seed Jessica Pegula, who also exited Wimbledon in the first round. "Historically, Wimbledon has always had a lot of surprises in the first round... that's always a topic", she concluded. | BGNES
