Greta Thunberg leads flotilla of boats for the starving in Gaza

This will be the largest solidarity mission in history.

Under the slogan "When the world is silent, we set sail," a flotilla loaded with humanitarian aid and led by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg is set to depart from Barcelona today in an attempt to "break the illegal blockade of Gaza," organizers said.

The boats, whose number has not been specified, will set sail from the Catalan port to "open a humanitarian corridor and put an end to the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people," according to the organizers of this initiative, called the Global Sumud Flotilla.

"This will be the largest solidarity mission in history," with "more people and more boats than all previous attempts to reach Gaza combined," said Brazilian activist Tiago Avila in Barcelona.

Dozens of additional boats are expected to join the flotilla, setting sail from Tunisia and other Mediterranean ports on September 4, while simultaneous actions "in solidarity with the Palestinian people" will be organized in 44 countries, Greta Thunberg, a member of the steering committee of the Global Sumud Flotilla, wrote on Instagram in early August. "A mission like this should not exist," the Swedish activist added. I BGNES, AFP
