US lawmakers approved a White House request to cut $9.4 billion from the budget — a big win for President Donald Trump as he tries to push through savings proposed by billionaire Elon Musk.
The vote in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives was seen as a first test of how willing Congress is to accept cuts proposed by the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Musk headed until recently.
The savings mainly affect foreign aid and public broadcasting, areas that are controversial in both parties. In the end, the bill was passed by a narrow majority of 214 votes to 212, CBS reported.
“Under President Trump's leadership, taxpayers are no longer funding wasteful spending,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said. “The money is being redirected to priorities that truly serve the American people,” he added.
Such bills to repeal already approved funding — known as “rescissions packages” — are extremely rare in US practice, and no such measure has been passed in decades. | BGNES
