Emma Watson's driver's license revoked for speeding

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson has had her driver's license revoked for six months after being caught speeding.

Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the film series, was driving at 38 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone in Oxford on July 31 last year.

Watson already had nine points on her license before the incident, the court heard.

The 35-year-old actress, who is currently a student, was ordered to pay a total of £1,044 at High Wycombe Magistrates' Court today, the BBC reported.

She did not appear at the five-minute court hearing. Representatives for Watson were sought for comment.

The actress has been studying for a master's degree in creative writing at Oxford University since 2023.

Watson rose to fame in 2001 with the release of the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, alongside other child stars such as Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.

She appeared in a total of eight films in the Harry Potter series, the last of which was released in 2011, and went on to star in films such as Beauty and the Beast, The Illusionist, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Watson's latest role on the big screen is in the 2019 remake of Little Women, directed by Greta Gerwig. In 2023, she and her brother launched their own brand of sustainably produced gin.

A new television adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books is currently in development, with Dominic McAuliffe as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron.

John Lithgow has been cast as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedwu as Severus Snape.

The series, produced by HBO, is expected to take a decade to complete.

Separately, another Harry Potter actress, Zoe Wannamaker, was fined for speeding on the same day and in the same court as Watson.

Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch in the wizard series, was caught speeding on August 7, 2024, on the M4 motorway in Newbury, Berkshire.

The 76-year-old woman was driving at 46 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone, the court heard.

She was fined £1,044 and had her driving license suspended for six months.

Wanamaker's lawyer, Duncan Jones, said she did not want "special treatment" and accepted the fine.

Like Watson, Wanamaker had nine points on her driving license before the speeding incident.

District Judge Arvind Sharma, who handed down the sentence, added three more points to both stars' licenses, meaning that both are banned from driving for six months. | BGNES
