26 countries have committed to ensuring Ukraine's security after the war

US support for European-sponsored security guarantees will be finalized in the coming days.

Twenty-six countries have offered to contribute to Ukraine's security after a possible ceasefire agreement with Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron said after the summit, adding that US support would be finalized in the coming days.

The summit of the "coalition of the willing" allies in Kiev to confirm security guarantees if or when a peace agreement is concluded in Ukraine was followed by a video conference with US President Donald Trump.

"Today we have 26 countries that have officially committed - others have not yet taken a position - to deploy troops in Ukraine as 'reassurance forces' or to be present on land, at sea or in the air," Macron told reporters after the summit.

He added that "these forces are not intended to wage war against Russia," AFP reported.

US support for European-sponsored security guarantees will be finalized "in the coming days," Macron added.

He said there was "no doubt" about the US's willingness to participate in security efforts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked European allies for agreeing to send troops to Ukraine after the war, describing the move as the first "concrete measure."

"I think that today, for the first time in a long time, this is the first such serious concrete step," Zelensky told reporters.

The French president also said that European countries would impose new sanctions on Russia — "in cooperation with the United States" — if Moscow continued to reject a peace agreement. | BGNES
