Biden: Trump favours Russia at Ukraine's expense

Former US President Joe Biden condemned Donald Trump's Ukraine policy, accusing his successor of "favouring" Russia in an interview with the BBC.

The U.S. government's pressure on Ukraine to cede territory to Russia as part of a peace deal is "modern-style appeasement," he said, referring to the appeasement policies of some European powers toward Nazi Germany in the late 1930s.

The interview, given by the former Democratic leader, is the first since he left the White House on January 20, although he has already spoken publicly, AFP reports

"I fear that Europe is losing confidence in America's security and leadership and the world, not just on NATO but on other issues that have consequences," he added.

"He is talking about Eastern Europe what this man wants to do is to restore the Warsaw Pact", he said.

"He can't stand that the Soviet Union broke up, and anyone who thinks he's going to stop is just stupid," the Democrat added, urging that we "do everything we can to avoid war" but "not give in to tyrants."

Asked about the funds allocated to Ukraine by his administration, which was in charge of the United States at the time of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Joe Biden said he had provided Kiev with everything the country "needs to ensure its independence."

Biden also criticized the way Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was treated by the Republican administration during his visit to Washington in late February, when a row broke out in front of the Oval Office chambers.

"I found that the way things unfolded was not worthy of the United States," Biden said.

The Democrat, who in the spring of 2023 decided to run again against Donald Trump, withdrew from the race in July 2024 after a disastrous debate, ceding his seat to Vice President Kamala Harris, who was soundly defeated by the billionaire Republican in November. | BGNES
