Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has sharply criticized US President Donald Trump.

“The leader of the world’s largest superpower is objectively a Soviet or Russian agent,” de Sousa said. According to him, Trump’s attempts to “settle” the war were not beneficial to Ukraine. “Objectively, the new US leadership has strategically helped Russia,” he added, quoted by Lusa and Euronews. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled that “every day” there are new threats from the US to impose sanctions on the Kremlin. However, in reality, none of Trump’s promises to increase sanctions have been fulfilled.

According to the Portuguese leader, Trump is trying to play the role of an “arbitrator,” but at the same time wants to negotiate “with only one side.” Kiev and its European allies are literally forced to put pressure on Washington to participate in the negotiations. De Souza believes that Europe has underestimated “the importance of Trump and Trumpism.”
