A U.S. House of Representatives committee has released the first batch of documents from the investigation into the scandalously infamous sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, AFP reported. More than 33,000 pages of materials related to the case were uploaded to the website of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform after being handed over by the Department of Justice.
“We are in the process of uploading these documents to ensure full transparency and so that everyone in America can see them,” said Committee Chairman James Comer. “We are working as quickly as possible. We want them to become public as soon as possible.”
Comer’s committee had issued a subpoena to the Department of Justice, and the first set of documents was handed over last month. It is not yet clear what new information the released materials contain, as thousands of pages related to the “Epstein” case had already been declassified.
In a statement, the committee noted that it expects additional documents from the Department of Justice, which are being redacted to protect “the identities of victims” and remove “any materials containing child sexual abuse.”
Epstein, a wealthy financier with high-level contacts, died in a New York prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of trafficking underage girls recruited for sexual services.
President Donald Trump was once his friend, and according to The Wall Street Journal, his name was among the hundreds found during a review of files by the Department of Justice, although there is no evidence of wrongdoing on his part.
Trump’s supporters have for years been obsessed with the “Epstein” case, convinced that members of the “Deep State” protect Epstein’s associates among Democrats and Hollywood circles, but not Trump. They reacted sharply when, in July, the FBI and the Department of Justice announced that Epstein had committed suicide, had not blackmailed influential figures, and did not maintain a “client list.”
Last month, the Department of Justice released a transcript of an interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate, in which she stated that Trump had been friendly toward Epstein but had “never behaved inappropriately with anyone.”
Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for recruiting underage girls for Epstein, was questioned by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche—a former personal attorney of Trump. The 63-year-old Maxwell, the only convicted member of Epstein’s close circle, was transferred from a prison in Florida to a minimum-security facility in Texas following the interview. | BGNES
