In his speech to the US Congress last week, Trump reaffirmed his designs, arguing that the US needs the vast Arctic island for national and international security reasons.
U.S. President Donald Trump is very unpredictable, the island's prime minister said, ahead of parliamentary elections in the self-governing Danish territory.
"There is a world order that is being shaken on many fronts - and a president of the United States who is very unpredictable - in such a way that makes people feel insecure," Prime Minister Mute Egede told Danish public radio.
In his speech to the U.S. Congress last week, Trump reaffirmed his designs, arguing that the U.S. needs the vast Arctic island for national and international security reasons.
Setting a timetable for Greenland's independence from Denmark dominated the territory's election campaign.
"We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you to the United States of America," Trump said.
He further said he was confident the US would get Greenland "one way or another".
The plans were met with laughter from Republicans in Congress, which many Greenlanders took as derisive.
"We deserve to be treated with respect and I don't think the American president has been doing that lately since he took office," Egede said.
"The things that the American president has done lately mean that you don't want to get as close to (the United States) as you may have wanted to in the past," he added.
The day after Trump's speech to Congress, Egede wrote on Facebook that Greenlanders "don't want to be Americans, nor do Danes."
"We are Greenlanders."
"Americans and their leader need to understand that." | BGNES
