U.S. President Donald Trump will hold a meeting on the future of Gaza after the war, his envoy Steve Witkoff announced. “Tomorrow a major meeting will be held at the White House, chaired by the president, and this is a very comprehensive plan we are preparing for the day after,” Witkoff said in an interview with Fox News, without giving further details.
He was asked whether there is a “plan for the day after the war in Gaza,” referring to the end of Israel’s military campaign against the Palestinian territory, which began in October 2023.
Earlier this year, Trump shocked the world with a proposal for the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip, expel nearly two million residents, and build coastal real estate. According to him, America should clear the rubble and unexploded ordnance and turn Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the idea, but it was sharply criticized by several European and Arab states. Witkoff did not disclose details of the plan but expressed confidence that it would be perceived as “thorough and well-intentioned.”
The war in Gaza began after the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which killed 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to AFP figures based on official sources. The Israeli offensive in response has claimed the lives of at least 62,819 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, figures the UN deems credible. | BGNES
