Tusk's government survives confidence vote in Poland

The vote, called by Prime Minister Tusk after nationalist Karol Pawlowski won the presidential election, led some experts to predict early elections.

Poland's government has won a vote of confidence in parliament. Donald Tusk's cabinet has thus shown that it still has the support of the majority, despite suffering a serious blow in this month's presidential election.

The vote, called by Prime Minister Tusk after nationalist Karol Nawrocki won the presidential election, led some experts to predict early elections.

“I want a vote of confidence because I am convinced, I believe and I am sure that we have a mandate to govern,” Tusk said at the start of the parliamentary session.

“The government faces very difficult, serious work in conditions that will not change for the better,” he added.

The government needed a simple majority, and after several hours of parliamentary debate, 243 MPs in the 460-seat parliament voted in favor of Tusk.

Analysts say that Nawrocki will try to obstruct the government and support the main opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), which backed him.

New parliamentary elections will not be held until 2027. | BGNES
