The ceasefire in Ukraine must be implemented unconditionally, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. She warned that Moscow would face tougher sanctions if it violated it.
“We support the proposal for a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire. It must be implemented without preconditions to pave the way for meaningful peace talks,” she wrote in X.
Von der Leyen posted her message while the leaders of France, Germany, the UK, and Poland were visiting Kyiv to show solidarity with Ukraine and increase pressure on Moscow to end the fighting.
"The ball is in Russia's court.
We are ready to maintain strong pressure on Russia and impose stricter sanctions in case of a violation of the ceasefire," the Commission President added.
The Kremlin shows no signs of stopping its invasion of Ukraine, despite US President Donald Trump's calls for a ceasefire.
Earlier, Moscow warned that there would be no ceasefire unless the West stopped supplying weapons to Kiev.
Von der Leyen said the common goal was to achieve “a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” which in turn would be vital for security and stability throughout Europe. | BGNES
