Austria declares three days of national mourning after school shooting

Ten people, including the suspected gunman, were killed in the attack, which is reported to have been carried out by a former student.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stoker declared three days of national mourning after a shooting at a school in the southeastern city of Graz.

Ten people, including the suspected gunman, were killed in the attack, which is reported to have been carried out by a former student.

Authorities later confirmed that six of the victims were women and three were men, without specifying their ages. Twelve people were seriously injured, AFP reported.

Police said the situation was “under control” and that witnesses and those affected were being supported.

The suspect acted alone and committed suicide in the school bathroom, police said. They added that his motive remains unknown.

According to police, the suspected perpetrator is a 21-year-old Austrian from the wider Graz area.

He used two legally owned weapons to carry out the attack.

The suspected shooter is a former student at the school but did not complete his education, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said.

“During the three days of national mourning, the whole of Austria will remember the victims,” Stöcker said at a press conference in Graz.

“This is a dark day,” he emphasized.

The chancellor added that the Alpine country had witnessed “an act of unimaginable violence.” | BGNES
