The new law in Georgia, which as of today requires non-governmental organizations and media outlets to register as “foreign agents” if they receive funding from abroad, is a serious blow to the country.
Along with other laws on radio and television broadcasting and subsidies, “these repressive measures threaten the very survival of Georgia's democratic foundations,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos in a joint statement. They called the law a tool “for the Georgian authorities to suppress dissent (and) restrict freedoms,” warning that it jeopardizes the country's ambitions to one day join the European Union. | BGNES, AFP
