King Charles: Cancer diagnosis made me 'one of many'

Charles, 76, who is still undergoing treatment more than a year after his diagnosis, said his battle with cancer had given him "an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work" of charities.

King Charles reflected on his experience with cancer, saying that it had "brought out the best in humanity," but acknowledged that each new case is a "terrifying and sometimes frightening experience" for those who receive the diagnosis and their loved ones, The Guardian reported.

In a personal letter published on the occasion of a reception at Buckingham Palace in honor of organizations that help people with the disease, he described himself as one of the "statistical" 390,000 people who "unfortunately" receive a cancer diagnosis in the UK each year.

He said that this "can also be an experience that brings out the best in humanity." He addressed representatives of cancer charities, saying, "You have the deep respect of my entire family."

Charles, 76, who is still undergoing treatment more than a year after his diagnosis, said his battle with cancer had given him "an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work" of charities. He added that it had strengthened his belief that "the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion."

He honored the late Dame Deborah James as an inspiration, quoting her final message and encouraging everyone to follow her example: "Find a life worth living; take risks; love deeply; regret nothing; and always, always have rebellious hope."

James died in June 2022 at the age of 40, five years after being diagnosed with bowel cancer. Her Bowelbabe charity has raised over £16 million since its inception.

His message was printed in a booklet distributed to guests at the evening reception at the palace, including James' parents, Heather and Alistair.

A royal source confirmed that there was no new information on the king's condition or treatment, but that it was continuing in a "very positive direction," which was reflected in his "very busy" national and international schedule. They described the words and theme of the message as "deeply personal" to the king. |BGNES
