OpenAI is in the midst of a major campaign to make ChatGPT an integral part of US colleges and universities, replacing many aspects of learning with artificial intelligence alternatives, The New York Times reported.
The company is offering students a “personalized AI account” as soon as they enter campus, along with their school email address. ChatGPT is intended to serve as everything from a personal tutor to a teacher's assistant to a career assistant to help students find jobs after graduation.
Some educational institutions are already on board, although the education system initially greeted the technology with skepticism and outright bans. The University of Maryland, Duke University, and California State University have signed up for OpenAI's premium service, ChatGPT Edu, and have begun integrating the chatbot into various parts of the educational process.
The company is not the only one targeting higher education. Elon Musk's xAI offered students free access to its chatbot Grok during exam season, and Google is currently offering students its Gemini AI suite for free until the end of the 2025-26 academic year. However, this is outside the actual structure of higher education, where OpenAI is trying to work. | BGNES
