The US has carried out airstrikes on three nuclear sites in Iran, formally joining Israel’s military campaign after days of speculation about possible intervention.

“Iran’s key uranium enrichment facilities have been completely and totally destroyed. Iran, the aggressor in the Middle East, must now choose the path of peace,” Donald Trump said in a televised address from the White House after the attacks.

Iran
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the attacks as “outrageous” and stressed that the country had the right to defend its sovereignty.

“The events this morning are outrageous and will have lasting consequences,” he wrote in X, calling the attacks “an illegal and criminal act.”

“In accordance with the UN Charter and the right to self-defense, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interests and people.”

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran also called the US action “a barbaric act and a violation of international law.”

“We assure the great Iranian people that we will not allow this national industry — the fruit of the blood of nuclear martyrs — to be stopped,” a statement carried by state media said.

Israel
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Trump, saying the attacks would “lead the Middle East and beyond to a future of prosperity and peace.”

“Your bold decision to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities with the might and justice of the United States will change the course of history,” he said in a video message.

Netanyahu added that he had fulfilled his promise to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Hamas
The Palestinian terrorist group Hamas condemned what it called “blatant American aggression against the territory and sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

“This brutal aggression is a dangerous escalation,” the group said. “It is a clear violation of international law and a direct threat to world peace and security.”

UN
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the strikes “a dangerous escalation in a region already on the brink.”

“At this critical moment, it is imperative to avoid a spiral of chaos,” he said. “There is no military solution. The only way forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace.”

US Democrats: “Unilateral military action”
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Trump of pushing the US toward war.

“President Trump misled the country about his intentions, failed to seek congressional authorization for the use of military force, and risked American involvement in a potentially catastrophic war in the Middle East,” Jeffries said in a statement.

“Donald Trump bears full and absolute responsibility for all adverse consequences of this unilateral military action.” | BGNES, AFP
