US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov presented a “new idea” on Ukraine during their meeting in Malaysia, just hours after Russian forces launched a massive missile and drone strike on Kiev.

“This is not a new approach, but rather a new idea or concept that I will present to the president (Donald Trump) for discussion,” Rubio told reporters, adding that it was not something that “will automatically lead to peace, but it could potentially open a path in that direction.”

No specific details of Lavrov’s proposal were disclosed at this stage, and Rubio stressed that further consultations in Washington are expected before a formal assessment is made. | BGNES, AFP
