Rubio: Trump’s Patience with Putin Is Wearing Thin

Rubio stated that the American president is no longer willing to wait for Russia to take steps toward ending the war.

U.S. President Donald Trump is increasingly frustrated with Russia’s lack of progress toward a peace agreement and is now threatening severe economic sanctions, said Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with Lara Trump on Fox News, according to a transcript released by the State Department.

According to Rubio, Trump’s primary goal is to end the conflict. “This is not his war... he inherited it and has done everything possible to bring it to an end,” he emphasized. Despite “very good conversations” with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone, which Rubio described as constructive, they have not led to tangible results. Trump, he added, “is losing patience.”

Rubio stated that the American president is no longer willing to wait for Russia to take steps toward ending the war. He said Trump is considering drastic measures, including a 100% tariff on Russian goods if a peace agreement is not reached within 50 days.

The senior diplomat also highlighted the human cost of the conflict, noting that over 100,000 Russian soldiers have died since the beginning of the year. He accused Russia of using “stalling tactics” to prolong the war. “He [Trump] won’t fall into the trap of endless talks about talks,” Rubio said, adding that the president’s firm stance stems from years of negotiating experience with “ruthless people in business.”

Rubio described Trump as the administration’s “deal closer,” capable of finalizing even the most complex negotiations. “The last five percent, the final few yards are always the hardest part of any agreement,” he explained.

The interview also addressed the deepening ties between China, Russia, and Iran, which Rubio said are a serious concern for the United States. He noted that China is providing significant support to Russia, especially through oil purchases, which are critical to sustaining Moscow’s war effort.

“Everyone knows—it’s no secret—that China is giving Russia as much help as it can without getting caught. The Europeans are already catching on. Putin couldn’t sustain this war without Chinese support,” Rubio stressed.

He added that China has a vested interest in prolonging the conflict, as it diverts U.S. attention and hinders focus on other regions of strategic interest to Beijing. Rubio also recalled China’s traditional support for Iran, including oil purchases and deliveries of defense equipment.

According to him, recent displays of American military strength, including B-2 bomber operations in various parts of the world, have prompted China, Russia, and Iran to act more cautiously. He called this a clear signal of the “exceptional military capabilities” of the United States.

Regarding U.S.-China relations, Rubio emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue between the two global powers to avoid misunderstandings and explore opportunities for cooperation despite existing “frictions.”

He paid particular attention to the long-standing trade imbalance, describing it as an “economic scheme” in which China enjoys “unlimited access to the American market,” while its own market remains “entirely closed.”

In conclusion, Rubio stressed the need to maintain respectful relations with China, but with a firm prioritization of U.S. interests in areas of disagreement. | BGNES
