Bulgaria is trapped by a raging wildfire crisis, BGNES reported.
Several major fires are burning across the country, with the situation deteriorating due to persistently high temperatures—averaging around 40 degrees Celsius.
The most severe situation is in southwestern Bulgaria, in the Strumyani municipality, where the fire has been raging for several days.
Another large blaze is burning near the town of Tran, close to the Serbian border. Twenty people had to be evacuated, and around 40 buildings have been destroyed by the flames.
A crisis headquarters has been formed in Sofia under the Ministry of the Interior to coordinate the firefighting efforts. Bulgaria has appealed to EU member states for assistance in combating the fires.
In addition to firefighters, many volunteers, forestry workers, military personnel, and military equipment have joined the effort to suppress the fires.
Today, two aircraft from Sweden and four helicopters from France, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia are expected to arrive in the country.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov stated that this aid is a tangible demonstration of European solidarity. | BGNES
