Disney's family film Lilo & Stitch maintained its dominance at the North American box office at the start of the summer, winning for the third consecutive week with $32.5 million in ticket sales, according to new data reported by AFP.
The remake of the 2002 animated film of the same name has so far grossed $335.8 million in the US and Canada and another $436 million abroad, according to Exhibitor Relations.
The cast includes Maya Kealoa (as Lilo), Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis, with Chris Sanders reprising his role as the chaotic alien Stitch.
In second place with $25 million is Lionsgate's Ballerina, a spin-off of John Wick, starring Ana de Armas as a dancer turned assassin and featuring Angelica Huston. Keanu Reeves also makes a brief appearance as the hitman Wick.
“It's a weak start for an action thriller spin-off,” said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, the latest and apparently final film in the hugely successful spy series starring Tom Cruise, based on a 1960s television series, took third place with $15 million.
The Paramount film has already grossed over $449 million worldwide.
In fourth place is Sony's Karate Kid: Legends, a sequel starring Ralph Macchio, the star of the original 1984 classic, and action icon Jackie Chan, alongside Ben Wang in the lead role.
The film grossed $8.7 million at the US box office in its second week in theaters.
Rounding out the top five is Warner Bros. and New Line's horror film “The Last Stand: Legacy” with $6.5 million. To date, the film has grossed $123.6 million at the US box office. | BGNES
