67-year-old Gary Oldman starred opposite Demi Moore in the 1995 romantic classic "The Scarlet Letter." He revealed his "periodic binges" on set that disappointed his co-star.
In an interview with Radio Times magazine, he said: "I think the worst thing you can do is let someone down. I was filming The Scarlet Letter with Demi Moore and during the shoot I had periodic bouts of drunkenness. Towards the end of my drinking, I thought, 'What's going to happen if I keep going like this...'
I was in a very dark place. I was drinking too much at lunchtime. It was very destructive. I went back to the set to shoot a very important scene, and I managed to get through it," he added.
Although it didn't show in his performance, the Harry Potter star admitted that he was "pretty drunk" during filming.
"You couldn't tell, but I was pretty drunk. The next day I said to her, 'I'm so sorry, you must hate me,'" he added.
I was humiliated that I was so unprofessional. And she said, 'I don't hate you. It's okay. I'm just disappointed.'"
In 1991, he was arrested for drunk driving and three years later voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation center.
Gary, who has been sober for 27 years, recently praised Demi for her success after her role in "The Thing," which earned her a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
"I couldn't be happier for her at this moment with this movie and this role. I think it's a beautiful thing. She loves it and she's really enjoying the success," he said.
In an interview with the media in February, Gary revealed that the two had "reconnected" after years of not being in touch.
He added: "I wasn't in a very close relationship with her, but I saw her recently and we just reconnected. Demi is a wonderful person. She's really very special." | BGNES
