Harvey Weinstein found guilty of sexual assault

Weinstein was retried for crimes against two women as well as new charges of assault against former model Kaya Sokolow.

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of sexually assaulting Miriam Haley and not guilty of sexually assaulting Kaya Sokolow after a retrial, during which three women recounted in detail how he had abused them.

Weinstein was retried for crimes against two women, Jessica Mann, whom he allegedly raped, and Miriam Haley, whom he was found guilty of sexually assaulting, as well as new charges of assault against former model Kaya Sokolow.

He was found not guilty on these new charges during a tense court hearing in Manhattan, AFP reported.

When the seven women and five men on the jury announced their verdict on the charge against Haley, the jury foreman said, "Guilty."

He shook his head when asked about the verdict on the charge of raping Mann and said "not guilty" on the Sokolak charge.

Weinstein watched impassively from close range, seated in a wheelchair and dressed in a dark suit, as he had throughout the six weeks of court proceedings.

But later, the 73-year-old man appeared to mutter "It's not true" as he was led out of the courtroom.

The judge ordered the legal teams on both sides not to speak to the media while the jury continued to deliberate on the remaining charge.

The Oscar winner's conviction is retribution for Haley, whose complaint contributed to the initial conviction in 2020 and helped launch the MeToo movement, which led to a series of allegations from prominent women who had been abused by men.

Weinstein suffered a spectacular fall from his leading position in the world of Hollywood and show business in 2017, when the first allegations against him came to light and caused a public outcry.

The movement shook the film industry, exposing the systematic exploitation of young women seeking work in the entertainment business and prompting reflection on how to end toxic culture.

More than 80 women accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct as a result of the global backlash against men who abuse their power.

Weinstein's initial 2020 conviction and resulting 23-year prison sentence were overturned last year after an appeals court found irregularities in the way witnesses were presented. | BGNES
