Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino has revealed which of his films he considers to be his best—and it's probably not the one you'd expect, according to CNN.
The American director has two Oscars: one for the screenplay of Pulp Fiction in 1994 and the other for the screenplay of Django Unchained 18 years later. But he doesn't consider either of these films to be his best – or even his favorite.
Tarantino said that his strongest work is Inglourious Basterds (2009), and his favorite film is his latest project, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. He made this admission in an interview for The Church of Tarantino podcast.
When asked which of his films he loves the most, the 62-year-old director replied:
"Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood is my favorite, Inglourious Basterds is my best, but I think Kill Bill is the ultimate Quentin film – one that no one else could have made."
Inglourious Basterds is set in France during the Nazi occupation and follows a group of American soldiers of Jewish descent who plan to kill Nazi leaders. It stars Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz.
Tarantino added that every element of the two volumes of Kill Bill, in which Uma Thurman plays a former hitwoman seeking revenge after waking up from a coma, comes directly from his imagination, passions, and loves.
"I think Kill Bill is the movie I was born to make. I consider Reservoir Dogs my masterpiece, and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood my favorite," he said.
However, he criticized some of his earlier films.
When asked if he would change anything, Tarantino admitted, "I messed up a few things along the way."
"The only thing that bothers me are a few shots in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction," he said, explaining that they contain "amateurish things" — such as equipment in the frame, a shadow from a microphone, or an "X" marking where the actors should stand. "I love those movies, but I made them early in my career when I didn't know what I didn't know. You need at least two films to understand how it's done," he joked.
During the interview, the director confirmed that his new project, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, has already begun filming.
In Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Rick Dalton, a fading television actor, and his stunt double and stuntman Cliff Booth is played by Brad Pitt. The two are trying to regain their fame.
Tarantino has already stated that his next film will be his last. It was long rumored that it would be a project titled "The Film Critic," but last year he gave up on it.
"I lost interest in turning it into a film," he explained. "I was excited while writing it, but when we started pre-production, I wasn't as interested in making it anymore. Partly because I was using skills I had acquired on Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, and both stories were set in a similar time and place. So I pulled the plug," the director concludes. | BGNES
