One of Robert De Niro's daughters, Irene, has revealed that she is transgender.
To "embrace this new identity," as Irene puts it, the ambitious actress and model shared candid details about her life as one of Robert's seven children. Actress Tuki Smith is her mother, as well as her twin sister Julianne's.
"There's a difference between being seen and being seen," the 29-year-old Irene said in an interview with Them.
"I've been visible, but I don't think I've been seen. I didn't grow up with a role in any of my father's films, nor did I go to business meetings or premieres. My father was very keen for us to find our own way... I want success to come on my own merits. Obviously, no parent is perfect, but I'm grateful that both my parents agreed to keep me out of the spotlight. They told me they wanted me to have as normal a childhood as possible," Irene said of Robert and Tucci.
"People always told me I was too much of something or not enough of something else growing up: too big, not skinny enough. Not black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, not masculine enough," she shared. "They never just told me, 'You are exactly who you are.'"
Inspired by her mother and "the influence black women have had on her," Irene decided to start hormone therapy in November last year.
"I want to see more trans women, more black women who may be curvier or don't fit the super skinny or chic mold," said Irene, who is currently studying to become a mental health counselor. | BGNES
