Zendaya to play Shrek's daughter in fifth installment of the series

Zendaya recently signed a contract to star in Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," and is currently starring in the third season of "Euphoria."

Zendaya has joined the cast of "Shrek 5".

The actress plays the daughter of Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz), the series' official X-page announced.

Eddie Murphy will also reprise the role of Donkey in the new film, Deadline reports.

Set for release on December 23, 2026, "Shrek 5" will be the first installment to hit theaters since "Shrek Forever" in 2010. No information on the plot is available yet.

Walt Dorn, who worked on the second and third films as writer and artist and as story supervisor on the fourth film, is directing alongside Brad Abelson (Minions 2), while Gina Shay of the Trolls franchise is returning as producer alongside Illumination executive Chris Meledandri (The Super Mario Bros. Movie).

DreamWorks Animation first announced Shrek 5 via its social media channels last July.

One of DreamWorks' most celebrated animated franchises, Shrek is based on the 1990 picture book by writer and cartoonist William Page.

The series kicked off with the 2001 film, which introduced viewers to Shrek, an ogre on a quest to save Princess Fiona (Diaz).

Winning the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and grossing over $488 million worldwide, the success of the original paved the way for the sequels Shrek 2 (2004), where Shrek meets Fiona's parents, and Shrek III (2007), which follows Shrek's journey to find the next heir to the throne.

The fourth installment, "Shrek Forever" (2010), explores Shrek's midlife crisis and his desire to erase his past.

The first four films earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide, spawning a global live-action show, a Broadway musical that earned eight Tony Award nominations and 12 Drama Desk Award nominations, as well as an immersive tourist destination in London and popular events and attractions at Universal Destinations & Experiences theme parks.

The franchise also includes the spin-off "Puss in Boots" (2011) and its sequel "Puss in Boots 2," which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Zendaya recently signed a contract to star in Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," and is currently starring in the third season of "Euphoria."
