French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed that Greenland “is not for sale” following his weekend visit to the autonomous Danish territory, which the United States has claimed should be American land, Anadolu Agency reported.

“In the face of a hardening world, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and predatory temptations in the Arctic, France is clear: Greenland is not for sale. Greenland must not be taken,” Barrot wrote on the social media platform X.

He confirmed that France will be “the first country in the European Union” to open a consulate in Greenland in early 2026, and that a committee for partnership dialogue will be established to strengthen cooperation.

“Greenland is European territory. The greatness of a nation is not built through the subjugation of its neighbors,” he added.

Barrot stated that Greenland and Denmark “are not alone” and promised, on behalf of France and Europe, to stand by them “today and tomorrow.”

His visit followed reports that Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen summoned the U.S. ambassador over news that American citizens were conducting an influence campaign in Greenland. The Danish public broadcaster DR revealed last week that at least three Americans with connections to President Donald Trump and the White House were attempting to sow discord between Denmark and Greenland. | BGNES
