Student protests to block Belgrade neighbourhood for 24 hours on 27 January

The blockade of Belgrade's Autokomando neighbourhood will begin on Monday, 27 January, at 11 am (Bulgarian time) and will last for 24 hours, students from the Faculty of Law announced today.

The blockade of Belgrade's Autokomanda neighbourhood will start on Monday, 27 January, at 11 a.m. (Bulgarian time) and will last 24 hours, students from the Faculty of Law were quoted as saying by Danas today.

"We will have tents and heaters as well as some activities like 'Tea Party with students', mini football, chess tournaments and many more," the protest organisers said.

"We invite you to join us in as large numbers as possible, especially in the late evening hours. This is a great opportunity for us to meet and socialize," the students added.

They added that the procession of the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Law will start from the Faculty of Law at 10:15 am (BST).

On 25 January, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic called on the police to ensure that the protests were secured, although he said the demonstrations were illegal. The president ordered law enforcement to prevent cars or buses from approaching the protests.

In a video message on his Instagram account, Vucic said this also applied to the 24-hour blockade of Autokomanda, which he assessed as extremely harmful "because citizens will suffer", and he did not believe there was a good reason for it.

"After announcing the blockade, I request the police to secure all access roads so that no vehicle can in any way threaten the safety of the people in this area. And let the citizens judge for themselves why some people have blocked the roads, streets and their normal lives," he stressed. | BGNES
