Ivan Ivanov claims second consecutive junior Grand Slam title in historic all-Bulgarian US Open final

He beat compatriot Alexander Vassilev in straight sets.

Ivan Ivanov celebrated his second consecutive junior Grand Slam title. He triumphed in a historic all-Bulgarian final with Alexander Vassilev at the US Open after 7-5, 6-3.

Ivanov proved to be fresher today than his compatriot, who had to go through a turnaround to qualify for his debut junior final. Ivanov, a Wimbledon champion, entered with the necessary confidence and experience from London, breaking early in the third game. However, Vassilev, who is the cousin of Grigor Dimitrov, managed to level at 5-5, but was broken on his next serve and there was no turning back for him in the opening set.

In the second, Ivanov pulled ahead 5-2 with two breaks before Vassilev returned one of them. However, in his very next service game, the fifth seed lost composure, and with that it was all over for him.

Ivanov, number one seeded, finished with 19 winners and 21 unforced errors. Vassilev failed to show what he is capable of, visibly tired from yesterday, and ended with zero aces and seven double faults.

"Hello. I am very happy about this final. Big congratulations to Ivan and his team. A great tournament for us. Thank you to everyone from my team. I am looking forward to the next tournaments. Happy holiday to all Bulgarians", Alexander shared after the final, and Ivan gave him his due:

"Congratulations to Alexander and the great week he had. Thank you to my staff. I am looking forward to returning to the court", he said, before presenting a cup to his personal coach.

Ivan Ivanov repeated Grigor Dimitrov's achievement from 2008, when Grigor also triumphed consecutively at Wimbledon and the US Open in juniors. | BGNES
