A goal from debutant Ngumoha earned Liverpool three points after a dramatic match at St James' Park

Just four days before his 17th birthday, Ngumoh was brought on by Arne Slot in the 96th minute as the Reds searched for a winning goal.

16-year-old Rio Ngumoh scored on his Premier League debut and secured a 3-2 victory for Liverpool against Newcastle on Monday evening, after the Magpies thought they had managed to salvage a point after trailing 2-0.

Just four days before his 17th birthday, Ngumoh was brought on by Arne Slot in the 96th minute as the Reds searched for a winning goal, Sky Sports reported.

The teenager was Liverpool's star in the preseason games, scoring three goals and two assists, and continued his good form by scoring his first Premier League goal with a shot into the far corner.

The crowd at St James' Park, which didn't need much to create an atmosphere that almost overwhelmed Liverpool, thought they had seen their team come back into the game and earn a point.

Bruno Guimarães reduced the deficit shortly before the hour mark. Then 22-year-old Will Osula came on and scored after Liverpool failed to deal with a long ball that was deflected by Dan Burn.

The comeback was even more impressive considering that Newcastle played half the game with 10 men after Anthony Gordon was sent off in added time in the first half.

He caught Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk on the back of the calf with his studs in a reckless challenge. Gordon was initially shown a yellow card, but VAR advised the referee to review the situation.

After reviewing the incident, Simon Hooper changed his decision and showed a straight red card, meaning the striker will miss the team's next three league games.

Liverpool were already leading 1-0 when Gordon was sent off. The England international had two more good chances, but a superb strike from Ryan Gravenberch flew past Nick Pope to give the English champions the lead.

Twenty seconds after the restart, with Slot still not back on the bench, Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool's lead. He had been linked with Newcastle in the summer as a replacement for Alexander Isak (who is rumored to be moving to Liverpool), but the Magpies were beaten to the punch in the race to sign the French striker.

He took advantage of a blocked shot by Cody Gakpo, made a short sprint, and shot into the bottom corner.

But teenager Ngumoh had the last word, scoring the winning goal when Newcastle had momentum. This gives Liverpool two wins at the start of their title defense, despite conceding two goals in both games.

Newcastle has only one point from two games and more headaches ahead of this weekend's match against Leeds. | BGNES
