Late drama in Geneva as Xhemaili sends Switzerland into first ever European championship quarter-final

The hosts were minutes away from being eliminated from the tournament.

Switzerland have narrowly qualified for their first ever UEFA Women's European Championship quarter-final.

The hosts of this year's edition had to suffer before reaching the knockout stages after a dramatic 1:1 draw with Finland in Geneva.

Natalia Kuikka gave the Scandinavians the lead in the 79th minute from the penalty spot before Riola Xhemaili sent the stadium into a frenzy with an equaliser in the second minute of added time. The draw left both teams with 4 points each in Group A, but the Swiss' better goal difference prevailed.

The team will thus be joined in the last eight by Norway, who won the group convincingly with three wins from three matches. In their last game, the Norwegians defeated Iceland 4:3 in a spectacle.

In the quarter-finals, Norway awaits the second placed team from Group B - most likely Italy, and Switzerland will face the winner of Group B - most probably Spain. | BGNES
