Alexander Zverev was dumped out early in the last Grand Slam tournament of the year - the US Open. The third-seeded German lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-7 (7), 4-6, 4-6 in the third round in nearly three hours and 50 minutes of play.
Zverev, a former finalist in New York in 2020, entered the role of the favorite against the Canadian and led after an opening set in which he made one more break than his opponent - 2-1. The second part was dictated by the servers. It came to a tiebreak, in which Zverev missed a set point at 6-5. Auger-Aliassime, in turn, managed to materialize his second set point to restore parity. This gave confidence to the 25th seed, who made one break in each of the next two sets to celebrate the final victory.
Auger-Aliassime will face Andrey Rublev in the round of 16. The 15th-seeded Russian won hard in five sets against the 173rd-ranked Coleman Wong of Hong Kong.
World number 1 Jannik Sinner lost his first set of the tournament, but continues to the Round of 16 after a victory over Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. The defending champion will face next Alexander Bublik. The Kazakh won a marathon battle with the home team's representative Tommy Paul after 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1.
Eighth seed Alex de Minaur defeated German Daniel Altmaier and will play Swiss surprise Leandro Riedi, ranked 435th, who reached the round of 16 after Kamil Majchrzak retired 5-3 in Riedi's favor in the first set. 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti will compete with Spaniard Jaume Munar for a place in the quarterfinals. | BGNES
