Sabalenka passes stern Raducanu test to reach Round of 16 in London

World number 1 is facing next Belgian Elise Mertens.

Aryna Sabalenka continued her successful participation in the Wimbledon Championships. The world number 1 was in trouble against Emma Raducanu, but stopped the former US Open champion in two sets - 7-6 (6), 6-4, in about two hours of tough battle.

Sabalenka was behind in both sets. In the first one, she found herself in the role of a catch-up player at 2-4, but took three consecutive games. In the tenth, Raducanu saved seven set points from her opponent and immediately took advantage of the disappointment of the leader in the scheme to show herself ahead again in the score with a break up. However, it was not enough for a lead in the sets. In the tiebreak, the representative of the hosts missed a set point at 6-5 and Sabalenka did not spare her for a set to nil advantage. In the second set, Raducanu pulled ahead 4-1, but did not take a single game until the end.

The world number 1 will face 24th seed Elise Mertens. The Belgian defeated Elina Svitolina in straight sets. If she overcomes Mertens, Sabalenka will certainly play an unseeded player in the quarterfinals - the surprise of the tournament, Solana Sierra from Argentina, or the German Laura Siegemund, who eliminated the Melbourne champion Madison Keys.

Today, in addition to the candidates for the title in the likes of Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva and Iga Swiatek, the current holder of the trophy Barbora Krejcikova will also play and face the tenth in the world Emma Navarro. | BGNES
