Trump: Club World Cup trophy to stay forever in Oval Office

He said FIFA has made a replica of the trophy that was presented to Chelsea after their victory in the tournament final on Sunday.

US President Donald Trump has announced that the Club World Cup trophy, which has appeared in the Oval Office many times, will remain there. He said FIFA has made a replica of the trophy that was presented to Chelsea after their victory in the tournament final on Sunday.

Trump attended the final match with several members of his cabinet, as well as FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The two presidents jointly presented the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James, with Trump remaining the center of attention despite apparent confusion among the players and Infantino’s attempts to persuade him to back off.

The incident is the latest in a long series of entanglements between Trump and the world of FIFA that began early in his second term. Back in March, Infantino presented the Club World Cup trophy in the Oval Office, where it has remained a permanent fixture at all official events ever since.

“I said, ‘When are you going to get the trophy?’ They said, ‘We’re never going to get it. You can keep it in the Oval Office forever. We’re making a new one,’” Trump said in an interview with the tournament’s official partner, DAZN. “And they did make a new trophy. So that was pretty exciting — and it’s in the Oval Office now.”

FIFA has not yet said whether the new trophy is any different from the original one. | BGNES
