Siri update delay pushes Apple to partner with Google and Gemini AI

The two companies are in early talks about a partnership that could change Apple’s overall AI strategy for iPhones, iPads and other devices.

Apple is considering a major change in the development of its digital assistant Siri, with a future version possibly powered by Google’s Gemini AI, Bloomberg reports.

The two companies are in early talks about a partnership that could change Apple’s overall AI strategy for iPhones, iPads and other devices. The decision comes after the launch of the revamped, AI-powered Siri, planned for 2025 as part of the Apple Intelligence initiative, was pushed back to spring 2026 due to reliability issues. That puts Apple at a disadvantage against rivals like Samsung, Microsoft and Amazon, which already offer more powerful AI assistants. While the company has traditionally sought to control the underlying technologies behind its products, generative AI has proven more difficult to develop on its own. Siri can now forward certain queries to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and later this year, the integration will expand to GPT-5 via Apple Intelligence.

However, Apple’s models still lag behind competitors, which is why the company is looking for new solutions, including by discussing a partnership with Google. Such a deal would give Siri significantly more powerful AI capabilities and expand the already existing cooperation between the two companies, since Google already pays billions of dollars a year to be the main search engine in Safari. If the talks progress, an entirely new Siri could emerge in the coming years – more flexible, more conversational and powered by the same technology that is behind Google’s most advanced products. | BGNES
