Throughout the night, Greek firefighters battled to bring under control a fire that broke out on the island of Thassos, near the main town of Limenas, Kathimerini reported.
The fire, which broke out for unknown reasons on July 9, spread quickly due to strong winds in the area. At dawn, firefighting equipment began dropping water from the air, quickly bringing the fire under control and reducing its size.
During the night, there was a large mobilization of firefighting forces and hundreds of volunteers who rushed to help extinguish the fire. Ferries transported fire trucks and equipment from the ports of Kavala and Keramoti to Thassos to help extinguish the fire, which at times seemed to be out of control due to the intensity of the winds.
Although no residential areas were threatened, only one hotel was evacuated as a precautionary measure. Tourists staying on the island also caused concern, with several heading to the island's port during the night in an attempt to leave. | BGNES
