Gauff advances to fifth straight quarterfinal in Paris after beating Alexandrova

The American will face next a compatriot - either Madison Keys or Hailey Baptiste.

Coco Gauff has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros for the fifth time in a row. The 2022 finalist defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 6-0, 7-5 in nearly an hour and 25 minutes of play and continues to dream of a debut crown in Paris.

The American, seeded second, swept aside her opponent in the opening set, which she won in less than half an hour. In the second set, Alexandrova was far more even, but after the two exchanged a break in the middle of the set, the 20th seed conceded another break that proved fatal. The tangible difference between the two came in unforced errors - almost twice as many for the Russian, 33-17. The winners were tied at 14 each.

Gauff will face a compatriot in the last eight of the tournament - the winner of the all-American clash between Australian Open champion Madison Keys and Hailey Baptiste.

Meanwhile, teenager Mirra Andreeva continues to impress. The 18-year-old Russian defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 7-5 for a second consecutive quarterfinal at the French Open, where she will play either home favorite and world number 361 Lois Boisson or number 3 seeded Jessica Pegula of the United States. | BGNES
