Sinner overcomes Auger-Aliassime to battle Alcaraz in another Grand Slam final showdown

The world number 1 was victorious after a for-set battle in New York.

Jannik Sinner will be fighting for a second straight US Open title. The world number 1 defeated the surprise of the tournament Felix Auger-Aliassime in four sets - 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in nearly three hours and 20 minutes of hard fought-battle, and guaranteed himself another clash with Carlos Alcaraz in a Grand Slam final.

The first set was completely dictated by the defending champion, who gave up only one game to his opponent, who was playing in the semifinals of Flushing Meadows for the second time. In the second one, however, Auger-Aliassime showed grit and after missing three break points in the second game, calmed down the game on his own serve and with a break in the eighth game was able to level the sets. In the third, the roles were reversed and Sinner made one break of serve, which was enough to win the set. In the fourth, Auger-Aliassime wasted five break points and was punished in the fifth game, and from then on there was no turning back for him in the match.

Ultimately, Sinner saved 9/10 break points and made significantly fewer unforced errors - 22 to 41.

In the dispute for the trophy on Sunday, he will play Carlos Alcaraz, who did not give a set to Novak Djokovic in the other semifinal. This will be the third consecutive final between the two best tennis players in the world at the moment after those in Paris and London, where the Italian and the Spaniard shared one victory each. If Alcaraz wins the final, he will also climb to number 1 in the rankings. | BGNES
