Stan Wawrinka bowed out of his home tournament in Gstaad early after losing to Alexander Shevchenko 3-6, 2-6 in an hour and 15 minutes of play.
The three-time Grand Slam champion missed five break points in the first set before being broken by the Kazakh in the sixth game. The second set began with a break from Shevchenko, who made another one to put the match to bed.
Both ended with an identical number of unforced errors - 21 to 19, but Shevchenko was almost 2 to 1 in the winners column - 29 to 16. He saved all five break opportunities against the veteran Wawrinka.
Shevchenko faces an all-Kazakh clash in the next round against second-seeded Alexander Bublik, the champion in Halle. First-seeded in the main draw is two-time champion Casper Ruud of Norway. | BGNES
