France is betting on artificial intelligence to modernize the education system

Élisabeth Borne, the Minister of National Education, is opening the door widely to the use of artificial intelligence by teachers.

Relying on new technological tools — this is the philosophy of the French government for the upcoming school year. Élisabeth Borne, the Minister of National Education, is opening the door widely to the use of artificial intelligence by teachers.

“We are going to offer teachers an artificial intelligence tool to support them in their work, particularly one that can help them prepare their lessons,” she said in an interview with Brut. “Obviously, in the end, it is the teacher who must finalize the lesson, but this tool should help them ‘clear the ground,’ so to speak. Moreover — and there are already tools that serve this purpose — it will also allow a better understanding of what a student has understood, what they haven’t, and where they are struggling,” Borne added, seeing AI as “a real lever for facilitating learning.”
However, Borne warned that AI is not an end in itself:

“Everyone needs to be aware that it’s a bit like an auxiliary brain. It doesn’t exempt us from using our own brain, from learning to reason, from learning to think. And for that, knowledge is essential. So AI is simply a tool that we need to know how to use properly,” she explained.
At the same time, AI training programs will be introduced starting September 2025 via the Pix platform in schools that volunteer to participate. From early 2026, the program will be expanded to all secondary schools and will become mandatory for all students in 8th grade (collège, 4e) and 10th grade (lycée, seconde). | BGNES
