Young traveler Moritz Preninger has died in Bulgaria, BGNES reported.
The 23-year-old Austrian is starting a kayaking trip on the Danube River on June 6 with the aim of crossing the road from Linz to Istanbul and is actively documenting his adventure on Instagram, where nearly 10,000 followers follow every stage of his journey.
“I love adventures.” – this is how the young man recently explained his motivation to travel hundreds of kilometers in a small boat.
However, his joyful adventure ends tragically. Moritz died in a diving accident in Tsarevo. The news was confirmed by his family, who published a message on social networks: “It is with deep sadness that we inform you that our beloved son died in an accident.”
"With complete dedication, he followed his adventures, loved the people around him and inspired so many others with his unique personality. He knew what he was fighting for, what was important to him, and at 23 years old, he was wiser and more insightful than most people we know. The pain is immense, but our love for him is even greater," the family shared.
The Burgas Police Department officially announced the recovery of the drowned man's body. The report was received on September 5 at around 7:00 a.m. A male body was spotted in the sea in the Boruna area under the Tsarevo Sea Garden. It was taken for an autopsy to the Forensic Medicine Department at the Burgas University Hospital. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case.
The mayor of his home municipality also confirmed the tragic news. Moritz's parents have traveled to Bulgaria to learn the details.
The exact circumstances surrounding the young adventurer's death are still not fully known, but according to his relatives and local authorities, it was an accident. Authorities in Sofia and Vienna are in contact, Austrian media report.
