Sinner defeats Djokovic and qualifies for the Roland Garros final

He will face Carlos Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final.

Yannick Sinner will face Carlos Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final after defeating Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, postponing his dream of a record 25th Grand Slam title.

The world number one eliminated the combative Djokovic with an impressive 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) victory on the Philippe Chatrier court to reach his first Roland Garros final.

“It was very special for me to play against Novak in the semifinals. I had to give it my all and play the best tennis I could. I'm very happy,” said the three-time Grand Slam champion, who now has 20 consecutive wins in Grand Slam tournaments.

Djokovic fought hard in a dramatic match that lasted 3 hours and 16 minutes, but three missed set points at the end of the third set ultimately dashed his hopes of a comeback.

Sinner, who has yet to lose a set in the tournament, will be hoping to get revenge on Alcaraz after losing to the Spaniard in five sets in last year's semifinals.

The Italian will play in his first Grand Slam final on a surface other than hard court after taking a 5-4 lead in his head-to-head matches with Djokovic with his fourth consecutive victory over the 38-year-old.

Djokovic's elimination ensures that the sixth consecutive Grand Slam title will be won by Sinner or world number two Alcaraz, which increasingly looks like a permanent passing of the torch in tennis.

This will be the first Grand Slam final in which two men born in the 2000s will face each other.

Alcaraz has won his last four matches against Sinner, including the Italian Open final in May, when Sinner returned after a three-month doping ban.

“Sunday will be very difficult, I know that my results against Carlos haven't been very good lately, but we'll see what I can do,” said the 23-year-old tennis player.

Djokovic was aiming to become the first man to win a Grand Slam tournament with victories over all three of the world's top-ranked players after defeating Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.

Instead, he will turn his attention to his seventh attempt to break Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon next month. | BGNES
