Ukraine to Allow Citizens Over 60 to Join Army

Under the law, those willing will be able to sign a one-year contract for non-combat service if they successfully pass the required medical examinations.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law allowing Ukrainian citizens over 60 to join the country’s armed forces, which are struggling to fill their ranks as the Russian invasion enters its fourth year.

Under the law, those willing will be able to sign a one-year contract for non-combat service if they successfully pass the required medical examinations.

“A significant number of citizens aged 60 and over have expressed a strong desire to voluntarily join the state’s defense. It is necessary to engage more people willing to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the document says.

Ukraine has already taken several initiatives to attract new soldiers, including the option of a one-year contract and financial incentives for people between the ages of 18 and 24.

In April 2024, the country lowered the age limit for mobilization from 27 to 25 years, despite US insistence that it be reduced to 18 years. | BGNES
