Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner in four sets to win the US Open, while loud boos mixed with a few cheers greeted President Donald Trump at the final in New York.
The 22-year-old Alcaraz won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win his second US Open title and sixth Grand Slam title, avenging his only loss in a major tournament final to Sinner at Wimbledon in July.
Alcaraz will reclaim the top spot in the world rankings from Sinner, returning to the top for the first time since September 2023, after ending the Italian's streak of 27 consecutive wins on hard courts in Grand Slam tournaments.
"I gave it my all today. I couldn't have done more," said Sinner, who was also defeated by Alcaraz in the epic Roland Garros final in June.
Sinner's defeat extends the longest drought without a successful title defense in men's Grand Slam tournaments in the Open era.
No man has retained the US Open crown since Roger Federer won five consecutive titles from 2004 to 2008.
Expectations for a third consecutive Grand Slam final between the two best tennis players took on even greater significance because of Trump's presence.
This was the American leader's latest visit to a major sporting event after his trip to the NFL Super Bowl in February and the FIFA Club World Cup final in July.
He appeared before the performance of the Star-Spangled Banner, waving to the audience, which greeted him with mixed cheers and boos. Later in the match, however, he received a colder reception when he reappeared on the stadium's big screens.
A number of stars from the worlds of entertainment and sport also attended the event, including rock star Bruce Springsteen, fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger, actor Michael Douglas, and basketball superstar Steph Curry. | BGNES
